Generally, most plastic surgery patients are 18 and older. However, there are some specific circumstances for a young female to qualify for a breast reduction prior to becoming an adult. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) provide important questions for parents and plastic surgeons to ask before deciding weather a child or teen is a good candidate for plastic surgery. Some of these questions include:
Q: Who desires the plastic surgery?
A: Plastic Surgery should be solely for the patient. The patient may be influenced by parents, friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, or peers, but should not be forced into surgery. These people make for a great support system before, during, and after surgery, but should not be initiating the reason for having surgery. The teen must be 100 percent committed and comfortable to undergo breast reduction surgery.
Q: Is your child realistic about the benefits of the surgery?
A: If your teenager experiences a low self esteem, the teen may think plastic surgery will change their life. They may imagine this new look will bring a new set of friends and more social opportunity. While the procedure may bring about positive changes in self-esteem, teen plastic surgery does not guarantee a fairy-tale ending. Teens who are seeking plastic surgery to acquire more friends should not resort to plastic surgery. They should try other ways to be involved such as community services, volunteer work and school events. However, specifically for a female seeking breast reduction surgery, it may help the patient be involved in sports more comfortably once the excess breast tissue is removed. In that case, a breast reduction may be a positive option for a young lady.
Q: Can your teen handle the recovery and healing process?
A: The recovery and healing process can be uncomfortable. It will need to be timed appropriately around school vacations, and they may not be able to enjoy their time off. For most plastic surgery, the initial healing process is about 6 weeks and final results may take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. It is important that the teen is physically and mentally prepared for their procedure.

- The word gynecomastia originates from two Greek words meaning “woman like breasts” – “gyne” meaning woman and “mastos” meaning “breast” respectively.
- It is a condition that affects 40-60% of males
- Large female-like breasts can form in a variety of different ages – some develop gynecomastia as a child and grow out of it, while other conditions don’t become apparent until around puberty and may remain until adulthood.
- Excessive use of alcohol, marijuana and anabolic steroids have been said to be associated with gynecomastia.
- Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts.
- Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the majority of cases of gynecomastia.
- In 2010 there were 18,000 men reported who selected surgical enhancement to obtain a more masculine physique.
- Gynecomastia usually does not respond to healthy diet or exercise
Treatment for gynecomastia is done through breast reduction surgery. It is a procedure that can directly reduce and remove excess fat and glandular tissue to the overly developed male breast, resulting in a chest that is more firm. Dr. Alexander’s breast reduction procedure gives Summerlin, Las Vegas and Henderson women freedom from physical and emotional pain cause by overly large breasts. In Las Vegas many assume “bigger is better”, but there are many women who have naturally large breasts that think “smaller is superior”. Breast reduction surgery has a very high patient satisfaction rate because most patients find a whole new sense of freedom after relief of the burden, lifestyle limitations, and associated medical issues caused by their big breasts. This surgical procedure not only reduces breast size, but also creates a shape and contour of the breast that is more proportionate to the body. Celebrities like Queen Latifah, Janeane Garofalo, Patricia Heaton and Soleil Moon Frye have openly discussed having this life changing procedure to enhance their quality of life. Check our these Hollywood Celebs and see why they chose to have breast reduction surgery. Which celeb can you best relate with?
Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah had lost about 25 pounds after months of healthy diet and exercises. She noticed that even after losing weight her chest size did not reduce. She underwent breast reduction to relieve back pain caused by her size F cup breasts. After surgery she admits that it really helped “lighten the load” and reduced the excess weight that she had to carry around. Queen Latifah can now enjoy her DD cup sized breasts while still in good proportion with her figure.
Janeane Garofalo
Some celebrities like Janeane Garofalo selected to have breast reduction as a career decision. As a stand-up comedian, she found that her male audience became distracted with her large breasts and were not focused on her comedy act. Garafalo reported to People Magazine, “I went down to a B cup, and it was the best thing in the whole world, like a new lease on life. Nobody knew; everyone thought I had just lost weight.”
Patricia Heaton
Patricia openly discussed having a breast reduction and tummy tuck surgery to restore her beauty after having four children. She has been pleased with the results and her new found confidence.
Soleil Moon Frye
By the time Soleil was 15 years old, she was 5’1’’ with a bra size of 38DD. She found that they were too uncomfortable for high-impact activities and she was teased often by other kids. Frye said, “I couldn’t sit up straight without people looking at me like I was a prostitute. My breasts became an insecurity.” At the young age of 16, she underwent a breast reduction procedure and reduced her bra size to a 36C. Afterward she remarked, “I didn’t know I would be so happy. I am just loving myself right now. I am finally free to be the teenager that I am.”

Breast asymmetry is more the rule rather than the exception as 100% of women experience differences between their left and right breast. In our practice we sometimes refer to them as sisters, not twins. The degree to which they differ may vary, but women may notice dissimilarity in size, shape, nipple location, or all three. It may affect the entire breast mound or just the nipples. Everyone is unique and that is why Las Vegas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Alexander takes measurements and tailors your surgical recommendations to meet your specific breast anatomy.
Breast Augmentation or Breast Reduction procedures may help with adjusting size differences. Through augmentation you can add saline or silicone implant to just one or both breasts to create more volume symmetry. For example, a patient has one breast that is an A cup and another that is a C cup. The patient likes the fullness of the larger breast and decides to add an implant into the smaller one to match. If the patient would like both breasts to be larger, adding two different sized implants may be a better option. A breast reduction procedure will do just the opposite. It reduces breast size and helps enhance symmetry. This may benefit a patient who has one breast around a D cup and another DD cup. She may benefit with a reduction if she would like one or both breasts to be smaller and possibly more uplifted.
Many women also experience more subtle differences that they may not even be aware of until they are measured at their consultation appointment. Sometimes those little asymmetries are better when they are left alone to avoid excessive procedures and incisions. Meet with Dr. Alexander to discuss the best surgical enhancement for you.
